We preserve the network of life through the project entitled No Species Dies Alone

The much-awarded project entitled No Species Dies Alone for which in 2023 Telekom Srbija received the Champions of Sustainability recognition for the best business practices and corporate contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and a special recognition of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce for its contribution to the preservation of biological diversity and an exceptional commitment to social responsibility, resumed through cooperation with partner organizations and support for the activities aimed at protecting endangered species and biodiversity.

Following the exposure of the “secret life“ of Aleksandar the brown bear of Mt Tara, a brown bear female was also tagged by a GPS/GSM collar with a camera in cooperation with the Faculty of Biology and staff of the Tara National Park in the autumn of 2023. The footage of the ten-month-long tracking of the bear named Paraskeva, which gave birth to two sweet cubs, revealed the details of her daily life, including the intimate and tender moments with her young. This scientific activity and a plethora of data of not only her movement but also of her visual experience of the environment, provided us with fresh insights into the life of the brown bear. These insights enabled experts to better understand the life of this valuable forest variety and work towards its protection and solutions for a safer coexistence with humans.

Owing to cooperation between the Company and the Gea Nature Society and the managing company – the Vršac Mountains Landscape of Exceptional Features, for the first time in Serbia, video monitoring was installed in the nest made by a couple of short-toed eagles, thus making it possible for the public to witness a tale of love, parenthood and strength of these magnificent birds. Using a 4G camera, these rare raptors were filmed unhindered during nesting in their natural habitat, and experts gained fresh information about the conduct of adult birds and their young.

The nest of a couple of booted eagles, one of the rarest birds of prey in Serbia, was also discovered on the Vršac Mountains. The population of this species includes only 15-20 couples. With the support of Telekom Srbija and again in cooperation with the Gea Nature Society and the managing company of the Vršac Mountains Landscape of Exceptional Features, the young of this endangered species was equipped with a satellite transmitter and marked in the nest. As a migratory species, it set off for Africa for the winter in September. The Company also resumed its cooperation with the Gea Nature Society in continued programmes of protection of endangered and useful owls.

As part of Telekom Srbija’s support for the Guardians of Nature Environmental Association of Požega, a satellite transmitter was mounted on a golden eagle young for the first time in Serbia as well. This state-of-the-art methodology in the monitoring of endangered species is used not only for scientific purposes, but also for the protection of species, given that it ensures the control of individual birds in real time and swift response, if required.

Cooperation with the Foundation for the Protection of Raptors resulted in the reconstruction of the aviary in the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Birds of Prey of the Siniša Stanković Institute for Biological Research, which becomes the sanctuary for a large number of birds of prey every year, particularly during the nesting season when many a young bird fall from their nests. The Foundation also invested funds in the procurement of a new satellite transmitter for the telemetry of the griffon vulture, which, using the GPS system, tracks the position and transmits data via the GSM network, ensuring detailed monitoring of the bird’s movement.

By supporting the implementation of the project entitled A programme for improving the habitat conditions and protection of the endangered species of the European roller in 2024, the Company resumed further cooperation with the Riparia Nature Lovers Association in the protection of one of the most beautiful birds in this country.

In order to protect the natural wealth of Mt Stara Planina, the Company aided the GEA Association for Ecology and Environmental Protection of the town of Pirot. Over the past few years, actively supported were also the beaver, European ground squirrel and lynx protection programmes, whereby Telekom Srbija makes its unwavering contribution to the preservation of this country’s natural diversity.
